Warper Party: Radio Wonderland
Hosted by DJ Shakey
Originally aired 3/19/12

On January 12, 2012 DJ Shakey hosted a multi-room, multi-media performance gala at the Clocktower Gallery as part of her production and project residency here for ARTonAIR.org. Over 24 artists occupied 8 spaces for 3-plus hours illuminating the theme of alternative controllers for electronic instruments both audio and video.

This show highlights one of the participating artists, composer Joshua Fried, also known as Radio Wonderland. Determined to disrupt the constant stream of media that surrounds all of us, Fried shuffles and warps the sounds of our commercial culture, using an arsenal of repurposed gizmos and liberated objects, such as an old Buick steering wheel and miked shoes, to drive tempos higher and faster. Willing to grab any sound from live FM radio, from jingles to news reports, and sample any genre, Radio Wonderland creates hyperactive electronic melodies from commercial sources that make people move.

This project was made possible by a grant from the Jerome Foundation. Thanks also to Brooklyn Brewery and Ableton for support.
