The Expanded Field #3: Hal Foster
Originally aired on
Monday, August 14th, 2006
Since the publication of The Anti-Aesthetic, in 1983 Hal Foster has occupied a central position in debates on modern and contemporary art and life. Prolific as an art historian and critic, he is the author most recently of Prosthetic Gods, an investigation into the transformed nature of the self in the era of modern art, and - with Rosalind Krauss, Yve-Alain Bois and Benjamin Buchloh - Art Since 1900, a textbook encompassing the intertwined histories of modernism, antimodernism, and postmodernism. He joins Jason Farago to discuss the role of the art historian in an era of aftermath and the challenges of writing about contemporary art.
