Originally aired on
Friday, February 19th, 2010
In front of full audience at 192 Books, Ted Conover reads from his latest offering, The Routes of Man: How Roads Are Changing The World and the Way We Live Today. In this work, Conover, one of the finest practitioners of contemporary American journalism, crisscrosses across the globe to
show how roads are connecting us for better and for worse. He has also served as a prison guard in Sing Sing, an experience he recounts in New Jack: Guarding Sing Sing, lived with Mexican immigrants as they cross the United States border without documentation, which he discusses in Coyotes: A Journey Across American with America's Illegal Migrants, and hopped the Western rails, as he relates in Rolling Nowhere: Riding the Rails With America's Hoboes. He discusses how the roots of this book can be traced to observations and interests he has held on to since the beginning of his career as a journalist (48 minutes).
