Lauren Redniss has written a stunning book called Radioactive, Marie & Pierre Curie, A Tale of Love and Fallout (IT Books, 2010) which chronicles the love story and other consequences of the journey taken by the scientist/discoverers. In 1891, Marya Sklodowska moved from Warsaw to Paris to work in the laboratory of Pierre Curie and soon fell in love. Together they discovered radium and won the Nobel Prize. Artist Redniss also describes the process of paralleling the story by utilizing color tones in the illustrations: the couple transitions from light blueprint images into full color when they encounter radioactivity. Finally, the author explains her choice of typeface and reads a passage from her book.
Recorded at 192 Books on March 30, 2011.
