Originally aired on
Monday, August 31st, 2009
Charles Bernstein in conversation with Ken Jacobs. Jacobs discusses
the political imperatives of his film making, his use of text in Star
Spangled to Death and his merging of visionary aesthetic explorations
with a formal critique of conventional cinematic representation in
Tom, Tom, The Piper's Son and his Nervous System performances. The
conversation concludes with a discussion of Child Labor, his 2007
film. Jacobs’s live film-projection performances of his Nervous System
series are legendary. The American Museum of The Moving Image in
Astoria, Queens, hosted a full retrospective of his work in 1989. The New York
Museum of Modern Art held a partial retrospective in 1996, as did The
American House in Paris in 1994 and the Arsenal Theater in Berlin in
1986. His work has been presented at the New York Film Festival and
the Whitney Biennial (29 minutes).
