Into the Soul of Samba SambaSoul or SambaRock are two terms coined to describe a very unique moment in Brazilian music. From the late 60s through the mid-70s, parallel to the Tropicália movement and it’s hippie/rock sounds, American-influenced Soul and R&B and the black pride movement had its impact on Brazilian pop music as well. Artists like Tim Maia, Jorge Ben Jor, Cassiano, Gilberto Gil, Trio Mocotó, Gerson ‘King’ Combo, Hyldon, Dafé, and many more started to create music hybrids that defied any category. It was new, it was fresh and it had a lot of Soul – SambaSoul!! This program is a short excursion into this vast and funky universe. Enjoy!
