Gallery Aferro: Art in Newark
Hosted by
Will Corwin
Originally aired on
Monday, October 12th, 2009
Will Corwin interviews Evonne Davis and Emma Wilcox, the founders and co-curators of Gallery Aferro in Newark, New Jersey. In a city fraught with evictions and municipal corruption, it can be tough to get people to focus on art. But armed with an iron will and fearless optimism, Davis and Wilcox have made Aferro one of Newark's preeminent art spaces. They discuss derelict roller coasters, whale murals, the nuances of Portuguese, and reveal the location of Queen Latifah's favorite soul food restaurant.
Evonne Davis works primarily with a combination of sculptural and video installations. Emma Wilcox is a photographer and conceptual artist (37 minutes).
