2010 saw the release of an incredible 10-CD box set Alan Lomax in Haiti. The original recordings, made by Alan Lomax between 1936 and 1937, were first deemed unlistenable by Lomax due to bad sound quality. However, because of recent audio restoration technology and the hard work of a many Haitian music enthusiasts, the music was been made available. Ethnomusicologist Gage Averill curated the music on the box set as well as wrote a book to accompany the recordings. Elliot Stapleton speaks with Averill about Lomax, the history of Haitian music and his involvement with relief efforts to Haiti in the wake of the devastating 2010 earthquake (42 minutes).
