The Squatters Mayday Celebration, which attracts crowds of several thousand people each year, has been hosted for the last 7 years by local party collective and arts organization,
Blackkat. For the last several years the on stage entertainment has been primarily Hip Hop and Dance DJs, plus political speakers, but this year were are trying to expand our lineup to include some live bands, a live hip-hop act, plus DJs and more circus and festival performers. Featuring music by MC Baba Isreal (Open Thought Music)--live hip hop, The Kin--live rock band, DJ Chrome (Blackkat)--drum-n-bass, plus performances by Missy Galore, Groovehoops, and others.
Jason co-founded New York's Blackkat collective in 1996. Its members - activist deejays, artists and dancers - are well known to New York City's dance-music culture for their unique synthesis of hard- hitting party music, social consciousness and multimedia installations and performances. Some of Blackkat's more notable events include an annual May Day party in Tompkins Square Park; a series at the original Lunatarium and rally parties such as the 2000 "Rave" at City Hall and at the U.S. courthouse against the ill trend in federal and local anti-club legislation. Jason has toured extensively with sound systems from the UK and San Francisco, and with New York-based crews who have performed in over 60 cities in 13 countries since 1995. From 1997-98, Jason BK helped organize over 100 events while touring the U.S. and Canada with the U.K's Spiral Tribe. In 1999-2000 he toured Australia with Bedlam and Negusa Negast sound systems (both from the UK), playing in virtually every large city on the continent as well as outdoors in East Timor. He has also toured Europe and the US with the famed avant-noise pop band, "God Is My Co-Pilot."
