Dispatches from SXSW 2010, Episode 2
Originally aired on
Friday, March 26th, 2010
This second episode finds Silent Barn's Joe Ahearn, moonlighting as AIR's SXSW embed, as he continues his valiant trek through Austin's mean streets during the festival's Music and Media Conference, with ShowPaper, his daylight lamp, in tow.
In Pt. 1, Joe talks to George Langford and Tom Van Buskirk of Javelin after an excerpt of their set, their battery of boomboxes sadly invisible to us out here in radioland. He then runs into Liz and Jenn Pelly of Pelly Twins, whose seven minute age difference haunts them to this day, and later gives us a sampling of Coasting's set, with whose drummer, Fiona, he has a chat (18 minutes).
In Pt. 2, Joe runs into Pat, Anna and Bill of These Are Powers, fresh off a ten-hour drive, who provide a thorough account of their frenzied schedule, including an upcoming show at Cinders Gallery's installation Temple of Booom at Austin's OK Mountain. After an excerpt of a set by The Weird Weeds, Joe catches up with the founders of Brooklyn's Cinders Gallery, Sto and Kelie Bowman, who indulge us with tales of their love for the fine folks at OK Mountain and give us a breathless litany of all the bands they're in, although we can only find links to dubknowdub and Hot Box. Joe concludes his Thursday morning odyssey with a set by Pocahaunted, a terrific band with terrific merch to boot, whom he then chats with (14 minutes).
In Pt. 3, from the yard of Austin's beloved, bonfire-boasting RanchO RelaxO, Joe talks to Austin natives Adam and John. After a set by Japanther, Joe talks with the band's Matt and Ian, old friends and supporters of the pre-commercialized SXSW Austin community, before checking out a performance by MtyMx busmates You and Me and chatting with them about the city's playground-like qualities. Then Tanlines takes the stage and talks to Joe about the early support of True Panther Sounds and their apparently unairable future plans at SXSW (17 minutes).
In Pt. 4, Joe--two days in and already losing track of the days--is taken hostage by the members of Audacity and meets up with L.A.-born, Austin-raised Sun Araw, with whom he commiserates about the SXSW lifestyle. The show closes out with excerpts of a live set by Vivian Girls (15 minutes).
