Award winning author Danzy Senna reads from her new collection of short stories, You Are Free at 192 Books on May 17, 2011. Her first novel Caucasia was a national bestseller and was named a Los Angeles Times Best Book of the Year. She's also written the novel Symptomatic and the memoir Where Did You Sleep Last Night? A Personal History.
In this recording, she begins by reading a section of the first story in her collection "Admission," which tells of the life of a mother who's beginning to realize just how much race and class will affect her toddler's life. Senna writes with effortless control and surpassing understanding of her characters' tics and neurotic tendencies. Employing the issue of racial identity as a leitmotif, she creates stories whose interconnections hum with humor and honest emotion, Senna educates us on what it means to be mistaken for white, or black, and the presumptions that go with those mistakes. A fresh, insightful look into being young, smart and biracial in postmillennial America.
