Christian Petzhold, Barbara 50th New York Film Festival Special: German writer-director Christian Petzhold won the 62nd Berlin Film Festival’s Best Director prize, the Silver Bear, for Barbara, his incisive chronicle of a doctor's titular character (Petzhold muse Nina Hoss). Monitored by the hawk-like eyes of the Stasi secret police in 1980 Communist East Germany during the Cold War, she is “punished” for applying for an exit visa. Part thriller, part character study and part morality tale, Barbara is personal cinema on a grand scale.
