Bent Hamer, O'Horten
Hosted by Stephen Schaefer
Originally aired 5/8/09
One of Norway’s most distinctively original voices in film, Bent Hamer explores, through breezy intimations of mortality and slapstick farce, the manifold psychic implications of retirement in his fifth feature, O’Horten. As the film opens, Odd Horten is 67 and on his penultimate ride as a train engineer. Hamer’s quirky way then finds Horten contemplating death, breaking into an apartment while en route to his retirement party on the floor above, being blackmailed into babysitting for a child and finding a soul mate who teaches him how to drive a car through Oslo’s streets blindfolded. The filmmaker opens up about casting, working in Norway and the siren call of Hollywood (35 minutes).
