One of the most unusual documentaries of this or any year, Waltz with Bashir, is an animated exploration of memory and complicity with evil. It begins with pack of howling, running dogs - a nightmare - that leads Folman to investigate his actions as part of the Israeli Army in the first Lebanon War in 1982. Folman discusses the major psychological upheaval he underwent during the four years it took to make Waltz, which was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film in the 2009 Academy Awards. Folman won the Israeli Academy Award for writing In Treatment, which HBO has adapted in an English language version.
