SMELL IT: This was Rudyard Kipling's professed method of understanding a foreign country. Fortunately, the guests in this week's AIR Stream use more sophisticated methods. The Quiet in the Land explores the ways in which art may connect otherwise distinct cultures, while Brett Dakin has dedicated much of his life to raising wider awareness of the current and historical political conditions in Laos. Béco Dranoff returns to AIR with his third monthly Brazilian music mix, scouring the country for its as-yet-undiscovered talent, and Barbara Bloom treks into foreign territory of an entirely different sort--that of the souls of others. Meanwhile, Sebastien Levin ventures out to the recently rediscovered Governors Island to see what some of the natives are up to. Take note, travelers, for much excursive knowledge is herein to be gained--just be sure to get more than a whiff.
